The hoop, if you can use one at all near a seam, sits off-center. Many garment seams cannot be hooped cleanly without crushing the bulk, so freehand work over the fingers becomes the real method.
Freehand over a curved seam means you feel the cloth with your non-dominant hand while the working hand places each stitch. That tactile control is accurate. It is also slow. Chain stitch that runs at roughly 25 to 30 links per minute on a flat panel can fall to 12 to 15 links per minute on a curved side seam. French knots clustered on a flat pocket field might take 4 to 5 seconds each. Garment shape adds another tax: the piece will not stay flat on the table the way a practice square does. A side seam on a tee wants to roll. A shoulder seam has thickness from the sleeve attachment. You stop, reposition, and smooth. Those micro-pauses rarely show up in a romantic photo of someone stitching. They show up in the final hours.

Stitch choice changes the time gap because some stitches tolerate bulk and direction shifts better than others, while dense covers punish every layer change. Backstitch and stem stitch travel well along a seam. They use a small footprint and let you steer with short bites of fabric. Chain stitch also follows a curve cleanly if you keep the loops even, though each link still needs a clear exit point through the stack.
Satin stitch is the expensive option on seams. It needs a stable, level ground to look solid. Across a seam allowance ridge, the threads can sink on one side and float on the other. Fill work then needs more underlay, more direction changes, and more re-work when a section sinks. Split stitch and long-and-short can bridge uneven ground better than a long satin pass, at the cost of more needle entries.

Thread fiber matters too. Cotton floss from makers such as DMC is common on garment work because it washes well and takes a firm pull without shredding as fast as some rayons. Even so, stacked seams will fuzz cotton if you yank. Short strokes and a clean needle eye keep the surface crisp.
Slower seam embroidery connects to what buyers pay because labor minutes are the main cost in hand-stitched apparel, and seam work multiplies those minutes without always multiplying visual area. A flat motif and a seam-crossing motif can cover the same square centimeters of surface. The second one still costs more clock time, more concentration, and more risk of re-stitch. Small-batch labels price for that risk. If a piece takes 6 hours instead of 3, the garment cannot sit at the same number as a quick flat monogram.

Machine embroidery can fly across a flat hoop. It struggles with the same bulk and curves a hand stitcher feels, which is one reason many commercial logos stay on flat fronts and avoid construction lines. Care still matters after purchase. Cold wash, inside out, mesh bag, and air dry protect both flat and seamed embroidery. Heat and hard spin punish raised stitches on bulk first, because the seam already stresses the thread path.
Embroidery puckers more near seams when stitch tension fights fabric that cannot spread evenly because seam bulk and prior stitching lock the grain. Shorter stitches, fewer strands, and lighter pull reduce the pull lines. Pressing from the reverse with a press cloth after stitching can settle mild waves; severe puckers usually mean the stitches were too long or too tight for the stack.
You can embroider over an already finished garment seam if the fabric still has enough body and you stabilize from the back when needed. Work slowly, use a sharp needle, and keep motifs that cross the seam relatively open so the bulk does not swallow the design. Dense fills on thick jean seams are possible and routinely take several times longer than the same fill on a shirt front.
Hand embroidery on seams is worth the extra time when the design needs to follow the body of the garment rather than sit as a flat badge. Placement that wraps a shoulder or frames a pocket edge often looks more intentional on the body than a floating rectangle of stitches. The cost is real hours.
